Known as the "Lotus-Born One", this great Indian mystic brought tantric Buddhism to Tibet. Regarded as a second Buddha, he overcame the local demons who opposed the spread of Dharma, pacifiying them to such a degree that they became Guardians of the Faith. He is the object of guru yoga, one of the preliminary practices of Vajrayana Buddhism. Particularly beloved of the Nyingma, he is invoked at the beginning of all practices. He is seen here with one of his main wisdom consorts, Yeshe Tsogyel.
